Most DIY floors look fine until the finish goes down.
We talk to DIYers all the time who are about to apply finish.
I spoke with our Flooring Specialist, Dane Rindler, about what he recommends. Customers regularly call in and work directly with him to get their setup right before they start.
In this article, we’ll walk through the most common finishing mistakes and how to avoid them.
There are many ways to mess up a floor. Bad sanding, scratches or waves, poor prep.
But most DIY problems don’t show up until the finishing stage:
- Mixing the finish incorrectly
- Applying it too heavy or too thin
- Contaminating the finish
- Mishandling the edges
That’s where the project can fall apart.
You avoid these problems by measuring correctly, applying the right amount, keeping your system clean, and handling your edges properly.
Measure Your Finish Correctly
To measure your finish, Dane recommends the Bona Traffic HD Naturale 1-Quart Mix Bottle to every DIYer ordering Bona Traffic HD.
He calls it a “small investment to save money.”
Bona Traffic HD is one of the best water-based polyurethanes available. It’s a two-component finish, so it comes with a hardener that you have to mix.
Precision matters. If you get the ratio wrong, you will see it in the finish:
- Soft finish
- Adhesion issues
- Coating failure
The mix bottle gives you exact measurements, so there’s no guesswork.
And just as important, you don’t have to mix a full gallon at once.
Once you activate the finish, the clock starts. The finish begins curing whether you’re ready or not.
Because you’re not working like a pro on your first go, it’s essential to mix smaller batches for control over your working time.
Stay in the Goldilocks Zone When Applying Finish
This is where so many DIY jobs go wrong.
Too much finish means streaks, bubbles, and longer dry times.
Too little leaves weak spots, uneven sheen, and a patchy look.
You don’t want either. You want to use just the right amount.
Dane says the Bona Roller Handle Kit gives you the “Goldilocks of application rate.”
“These have the training wheels, little plastic discs on the edges that keep you from putting it on too heavy or too thin.”
Uneven film thickness causes streaks, dull spots, or inconsistent sheen.
With this applicator kit, you can more easily achieve a professional, uniform finish across the entire surface.
Keep Your Finish System Clean
Here’s the mistake that sneaks up on people.
Using the same roller cover for both sealer and finish.
Even if the roller you used to seal the floor looks clean enough to use for finish, it’s not.
When you mix sealer and finish this way, you contaminate the finish layer.
That’s when you start seeing:
- Patchy sheen
- Cloudiness
- Streaks and lap marks
- Inconsistent appearance
The NWFA calls this out too. Contamination and debris in finish are a major cause of visible defects.
The rule is simple: one roller for sealer and one for finish.
Use the Right Roller Covers
Dane recommends the 10″ Bona Microfiber Roller Cover and the 10″ Bona Blue Stripe Roller Cover.
Both lay the finish down evenly.
The Blue Stripe Roller Cover gives you visual feedback.
You can see it moving across the floor, which helps you can maintain a steady pace and avoid dragging or missing spots.
Handle Your Edges Properly
The roller won’t get tight to the wall.
You don’t want your floor to look fine in the field but shoddy at the edges.
For edges, use a DURAMFOAM cut-in floor trim pad. It gives you control and keeps your application consistent with the rest of the floor.
Summary
The finishing stage is where DIY refinishing projects come together—or fall apart.
That’s why Dane recommends this setup. The mix bottle keeps your ratios right. The roller system keeps your coverage even. Separate covers keep your finish clean. And cut-in pads keeps your edges consistent with the field.
Each one solves a problem that shows up all the time on DIY jobs.
Get these details right, and the finish lays down smooth, even, and consistent.
Miss them, and you will have to redo the floor.
