Shop Flooring by Type
We carry four types of waterproof flooring: waterproof wood, luxury vinyl plank, luxury vinyl tile, and waterproof laminate.
Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring
Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring is the most installed waterproof flooring type in the country. It gives you a realistic wood look with a 100% waterproof construction from the wear layer through the core.
Most LVP installs as a floating floor over existing subfloors. That keeps install time down and makes it easy to install yourself.
Luxury Vinyl Tile Flooring
Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) gives you the look of stone or ceramic tile with a softer feel underfoot.
It’s built for bathrooms, laundry rooms, and utility spaces where you want durable, waterproof performance without the weight, mortar, and grout maintenance of real tile.
Waterproof Laminate Flooring
Laminate flooring gives you the highest level of scratch resistance. Today’s waterproof laminates use tight-locking joint systems and water-repellant edge coatings to block moisture from reaching the wood fiber core.
Read our guide comparing laminate vs. vinyl flooring. If you want the best scratch resistance alongside waterproofing, then laminate is worth a serious look.
Waterproof Wood Flooring
Waterproof wood flooring bonds a genuine hardwood veneer to a waterproof rigid core. The surface is finished to be watertight, so the floor operates as a waterproof system.
The construction protects the veneer while the core stays completely sealed, so you get the look and feel of hardwood in spaces you would be wary to install it.
What is waterproof flooring?
Waterproof flooring resists water through the surface and the core. Water-resistant flooring slows the penetration of water; however, it can still enter through the seams and edges.
COREtec introduced the first waterproof vinyl floor. Since then, manufacturers have applied waterproof technology in other flooring categories. Each construction works differently, but the goal is the same: water stays on top.
That said, “waterproof” has limits. A properly installed waterproof floor handles normal household moisture, such as spilled drinks, wet shoes, pet accidents, and steam from the shower. It gives you time to clean up without the floor taking damage.
But the waterproofing protects the floor covering itself, not the room.
No floor survives standing water indefinitely. A slow leak, a failed appliance, or a flooding event is an insurance situation. At that point, water mitigation crews remove materials quickly to prevent mold and structural damage. Floors are rarely salvaged in a flood regardless of their waterproof rating.
In short, waterproof flooring buys you time and makes cleanup easy. It’s the right call for kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and any room where you want the best defense against moisture.
Waterproof Vs. Water-Resistant Flooring
Even the best waterproof flooring still depends on proper installation and maintenance. A waterproof floor doesn’t make the entire room waterproof. You will still want to stay in the habit of cleaning up any water quickly.
Best Waterproof Flooring by Room
Waterproof Flooring for Bathrooms
Bathrooms need a floor that handles splashes, steam, humidity, and daily cleaning without becoming a maintenance chore. You want a surface that feels comfortable and can handle daily water exposure.
We recommend TruCor tile for bathrooms where you want the look of porcelain or stone, without the cold hard feel or grout.
Its 100% waterproof construction and tile-look give you a natural fit for full baths, powder rooms, and laundry areas.
For a tougher, commercial-grade option, Happy Feet Iron Man is a strong bathroom choice. You install it with full-spread adhesive for maximum stability. And its 22 mil aluminum oxide wear layer gives you incredible durability.
Waterproof Flooring for Basements
Basements put different demands on flooring than the rest of the house. Temperature swings, humidity changes, and moisture intrusion below grade mean you need something built for that environment.
COREtec Pro Classics is one of the most reliable waterproof basement floors in our catalog. Its rigid SPC construction stays stable through temperature and humidity swings. You get a high-end wood visual without the moisture risk.
For finished basements where the look matters as much as performance, Raintree Laguna Vibes brings a genuine wood veneer on a waterproof core. Real hardwood over a waterproof core — the strongest combination of good looks and durability for a finished basement.
Waterproof Flooring in the Kitchen
Your kitchen floor sees more action than any other room in your home. Dropped utensils, scraping chairs, tracked grit, pet traffic, and water spills. This means you need surface durability as much as you need to protect against water.
COREtec Pro Premium is a strong kitchen pick: 20 mil wear layer, SPC core, built-in cork underlayment. It’s the higher-end version of COREtec Pro Classics, perfect when you want the best of the best.
If you prioritize scratch protection, Mohawk Revwood Premier is a beautiful and durable kitchen floor. Its locking mechanism keeps water from getting into the core, and the realistic wood visual works beautifully in open-concept kitchens where the floor runs into the living area.
Complete Your Project
Getting the right underlayment, trim, and supplies in the same order saves you time and money. We offer everything you need to complete your project. Call or email us to match trim, moldings, or to answer any questions you have.
FAQs About Waterproof Flooring
Is laminate flooring waterproof?
Is vinyl flooring waterproof?
Is engineered hardwood waterproof?
Standard engineered hardwood isn’t waterproof. Typically, engineered hardwood has a plywood core that is more dimensionally stable and tolerant of changes in temperature and humidity than solid.
Raintree is engineered hardwood with a waterproof core. The watertight, finished wood veneer bonds to a waterproof core for a waterproof floor. The manufacturer refers to this combination as waterproof wood.
How do you clean waterproof floors?
Be conscious of the cleaner you use. The wrong one can leave streaks or haze on your floor. We recommend getting a bucket, microfiber mop, and replacement pads for a convenient system that makes it easy.
Does waterproof vinyl flooring need underlayment?
It depends on the product. Many waterproof vinyl floors come with underlayment already attached to the back of the planks. COREtec Pro Premium, for example, includes built-in cork underlayment.
You don’t need additional underlayment if the product has one that comes already attached. If there’s no attached underlayment, check the manufacturer’s specs. Read our in-depth article about vinyl underlayment.
