Traditional Red Oak Floors: The Ultimate American Classic
While often overshadowed by its cousin, white oak, red oak flooring offers a range of benefits that many homeowners overlook.
Red oak wood has strong ties to American history; once people discovered its vast abundance and natural durability, it quickly replaced the softwood floors of the past and became the main hardwood flooring choice for U.S. households.
The natural reddish-brown color and distinct grain pattern of red oak hardwood give it a warmer, rosier look than white oak. It’s also a more cost-effective choice, typically priced lower due to its wider availability and faster growth rate.

What our customers are saying:
FAQs
Is red oak flooring harder than white oak?
Tight budgets and traffic-heavy rooms both push the same question, and the answer surprises people: red oak flooring is only marginally softer than white oak, with a Janka hardness of about 1290 versus roughly 1360 for white oak. That gap is small enough that it rarely drives the decision for a residential job. Red oak’s open grain also hides dents and seasonal movement well, which is part of why it became the default American hardwood floor in the first place.
What is the difference between red oak and white oak flooring?
The clearest difference is undertone: red oak carries a warm, rosier cast, while white oak reads cooler and more neutral, which changes how each one takes a stain. Red oak’s grain is more pronounced and wavy, white oak’s is tighter and straighter. Red oak is also typically more cost-effective thanks to its wider availability and faster growth. Our red oak vs. white oak guide breaks down the trade-offs in detail.
Does red oak flooring come in solid, engineered, and unfinished?
Yes. We stock hundreds of red oak options across solid, engineered, and unfinished constructions, so you can specify the build that fits the subfloor and the grade level of the job. Solid is the traditional choice for above-grade rooms and refinishes many times over, while engineered adds dimensional stability for basements and spaces with bigger humidity swings.
Can red oak be stained gray or a modern dark color?
Red oak can absolutely be stained gray, dark, or anything in between, though its natural red undertone needs to be managed. A toner, a double application, or a reactive stain helps neutralize the pink before the color coat goes down, which lets red oak land much closer to the cool palettes usually associated with white oak.
