Most DIY floors look fine until the finish goes down. We talk to DIYers all the time who are about to apply finish. I spoke with our Flooring Specialist, Dane Rindler, about what he recommends. Customers regularly call in and work directly with him to get their setup...

 Applicator FAQ
Read this before you pour the finish. Most problems start here.
What applicator should I use for water-based polyurethane?
A roller is probably your best bet.
You can apply water-based polyurethane with:
- Rollers
- T-bars
- Syntehtic pads or even lambswool (depending on the product)
Here’s the simple rule: follow the finish manufacturer’s recommendation and coverage rate.
Water-based poly dries fast. That means your applicator needs to control the spread and keep the film even. If it lays down too much or too little, the floor will show it.
The application method and applicator choice must match the product.
What applicator should I use for oil-based polyurethane?
Use a lambswoold applicator or a roller.
Most contractors use lambswool because it’s more forgiving. It holds more finish, lays down a fuller coat, and lets the finish level naturally. A roller works too, but requires more control.
What's the difference between lambswool and roller applicators?
Lambswool carries more material and releases it smoothly, which makes it forgiving.
Rollers release finish evenly and in a controlled way. And that favors water-based systems.
How do I avoid streaks and lap marks?
Maintain a wet edge and stay consistent in how you apply the finish.
Work in manageable sections, overlap each pass, and keep moving.
Most problems come from stopping, overworking, or changing pace mid job.
The NWFA identifies applicator marks and uneven film build as common defects.
How much finish should I apply?
Always read the technical data sheets so you can follow exactly what the product calls for.
Too heavy and you will get bubbles, slow dry times, and a soft finish.
Too light and you will get weak protection and uneven sheen.
Maintain the recommended coverage rate to achieve proper film thickness.
One great product that helps with this is the Bona Handle Roller Kit.
Can I use the same applicator for sealer and finish?
You can use the same frame or T-bar, but never use the same cover. Don’t dip a roller in sealer, use it, and then clean it and apply the finish.
Contamination is a major cause of finish defects.
Always use a new cover for sealer and a new cover for finish.
Do I need to plan my application before I start?
Always map your starting point, path, and how you will exit the room for the best results.
