Most DIY floors look fine until the finish goes down. We talk to DIYers all the time who are about to apply finish. I spoke with our Flooring Specialist, Dane Rindler, about what he recommends. Customers regularly call in and work directly with him to get their setup...

Flooring Trowels FAQ
Read answers to common flooring trowel questions.
What does a flooring trowel actually do?
A flooring trowel controls how material moves across the surface. That could be adhesive, filler, patch, or leveling compound. The edge of the trowel (smooth or notched) determines how much material you leave behind and how evenly it’s distributed. That directly affects how the floor installs, bonds, and finishes.
What’s the difference between a notched trowel and a smooth trowel?
A notched trowel controls material thickness. You use it when the amount matters, like with adhesives or moisture barriers.
A smooth trowel spreads and levels material. You use it for filler, patch, or skim work where you’re trying to create a flat surface, not a measured build.
How do you choose the right trowel?
Start with the material, not the tool.
Adhesives require specific notch sizes to achieve proper coverage. Fillers and patches require the right width and flexibility to spread clean and flat. If you mismatch the trowel to the material, you lose control of the application.
What happens when you use the wrong trowel?
You lose consistency.
With adhesives, that means poor transfer or excess buildup. With fillers, it means ridges, low spots, and more sanding. Either way, you’re creating problems that show up later in the job.
Do you need multiple trowels on a job?
Yes, if you’re preparing, installing, and finishing. Each step calls for a different edge, size, or flexibility. Trying to force one trowel to do everything usually costs you time and quality.
How do you know you’re using the trowel correctly?
You look at the result.
Adhesive should transfer evenly. Filler should lay flat without ridges. Patch should feather clean. If you’re fighting the material, it’s usually the wrong trowel or the wrong technique.
Does surface prep affect how a trowel performs?
100%.
A trowel can’t fix a bad surface. High spots, debris, or poor prep will throw off your spread no matter what you’re using. Proper substrate prep is what allows the trowel to do its job correctly.
When should you replace a trowel?
Replace your trowel when it stops giving you a clean, consistent result. Notches wear down, edges nick, and blades lose their flexibility.Â
