There are many ways to mess up a floor. Bad sanding, scratches or waves, poor prep.
But most DIY problems don’t show up until the finishing stage:
- Mixing the finish incorrectly
- Applying it too heavy or too thin
- Contaminating the finish
- Mishandling the edges
That’s where the project can fall apart.
You avoid these problems by measuring correctly, applying the right amount, keeping your system clean, and handling your edges properly.
Measure Your Finish Correctly
To measure your finish, Dane recommends the Bona Traffic HD Naturale 1-Quart Mix Bottle to every DIYer ordering Bona Traffic HD.

Bona Traffic HD is one of the best water-based polyurethanes available. It’s a two-component finish, so it comes with a hardener that you have to mix.
Precision matters. If you get the ratio wrong, you will see it in the finish:

Too much finish means streaks, bubbles, and longer dry times.

Keep Your Finish System Clean
Here’s the mistake that sneaks up on people.
Using the same roller cover for both sealer and finish.
Even if the roller you used to seal the floor looks clean enough to use for finish, it’s not.
When you mix sealer and finish this way, you contaminate the finish layer.
That’s when you start seeing:
- Patchy sheen
- Cloudiness
- Streaks and lap marks
- Inconsistent appearance
The NWFA calls this out too. Contamination and debris in finish are a major cause of visible defects.
The rule is simple: one roller for sealer and one for finish.
Use the Right Roller Covers

Handle Your Edges Properly
The roller won’t get tight to the wall.
