A finish picked too late, a missed recoat window, or one missing gallon can push a fall refinishing job past Thanksgiving.
When you’re doing the work, quoting the next job, and answering the calls, it’s easy to book a job before you’ve ordered the supplies.
Knowing when the complete order can reach you makes it easier to set a start date you can count on. These 10 tips cover the schedule, the room, the color pick, and the supplies that keep a fall job moving.
1. The right finish for the job sets the schedule
When the holiday date is what matters most, we’d start with Bona Traffic HD, because its full cure of about 3 days is the shortest of these four water-based finishes. Each of the other three wins on something else, and that difference changes how you plan the coating days.
Bona Traffic HD
Traffic HD is a two-component finish for residential and commercial floors, and Bona rates its scuff, scratch, and chemical resistance at full cure as unsurpassed.
Each gallon comes with its hardener.
LOBA EasyFinish
EasyFinish is a one-component finish for high-traffic homes and light commercial work.
There’s no hardener to mix and no pot life to watch, and at 500 to 600 square feet per gallon, per coat, it covers the most floor of the four.
LOBA 2K InvisibleProtect
InvisibleProtect is the pick when the floor should look and feel like natural, untreated wood. It’s self-sealing and non-ambering, so the standard system doesn’t need a separate sealer.
That said, its 2-hour pot life is the shortest of the three two-component finishes, and smaller batches keep it from going to waste.
Basic Coatings StreetShoe NXT
StreetShoe NXT is one of the most underrated finishes we carry. It’s a two-component finish for high-wear homes, commercial floors, and sports floors, and once it’s catalyzed, a batch stays usable for 24 hours. Its recoat window is much shorter, and that’s the trap in tip 3.
2. Work backward from the rug return dates
The finish decides when the rugs can go back down, and on a fall job that date can land later than you’d plan for. A floor ready for light foot traffic isn’t necessarily ready for the rug.
These times come from the manufacturers’ technical sheets. Cool rooms, high humidity, poor ventilation, and heavy coats can extend drying and curing.
StreetShoe NXT is the one to watch. Its full cure is about 7 days, but Basic Coatings says not to cover the floor for at least two weeks after the finish has dried. It helps to leave the rug date in writing and move it if drying runs late.
3. Plan the overnight break before you mix
An overnight break works when you know two numbers before you mix. Pot life is how long the mixed finish stays usable.
The recoat window is how long you can wait between coats before the maker requires abrasion, and the two run on different clocks.
A mixed batch of StreetShoe NXT stays usable for 24 hours, but its recoat window is 12 hours. The batch can still be good the next morning — when the floor is already past its window.
If you lay down a coat at 7 pm and recoat at 6:30 am, you’re within that window.
According to the manufacturer, you can apply another coat without abrading if the floor is dry, clean, and smooth.
An overnight break that runs past 12 hours adds preparation before the next coat. Basic Coatings calls for abrading with its pad-and-strip system and 180- to 240-grit sanding strips, or its TyKote dust-free system instead.
The other three give you more room. Traffic HD doesn’t require abrading unless more than 48 hours have passed, and the two LOBA finishes allow 24 hours, though LOBA’s own procedures call for an intermediate sanding between coats anyway.
4. Room and truck conditions decide how the finish behaves
The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) sand and finish guidelines call for room and floor temperatures between 60 and 80°F when you finish. Each finish sets its own range on top of that. Bona lists 65 to 80°F and 40 to 60% relative humidity for Traffic HD, and LOBA lists 55 to 80°F and 40 to 75% for EasyFinish and InvisibleProtect.
In Ohio, we like to see indoor humidity at 45 to 48%. That’s our target, not a requirement from the finish makers. Once the heat starts running, the air dries out fast, so it’s worth asking the homeowner to keep the heat and humidity steady through drying and curing.
The finish in the truck has its own rules. Bona, LOBA, and Basic Coatings all say to keep Traffic HD, InvisibleProtect, and StreetShoe NXT from freezing, and StreetShoe NXT should come to room temperature before use. LOBA says EasyFinish has no risk of frost damage in transport, but a can that tolerated the cold isn’t ready to apply while it’s still cold.
5. Know which gaps are seasonal before you use filler
A gap that opens every winter and closes every summer shouldn’t get filler in the fall.
A floor you refinish now may develop gaps as the heat comes on and the indoor air dries out, so it helps to ask whether the gaps showed up last winter and closed in the warmer months.
The NWFA’s sand and finish guidelines say not to fill seasonal gaps during the dry winter months in areas with humidity swings.
Filler used there will likely damage the floor when the wood expands again.
Explaining seasonal movement before sanding sets expectations for how the refinished floor may look through winter.
Gaps that stay open all year, loose boards, and unusual movement are worth a closer look during the walkthrough.

6. Confirm the color with a complete floor sample
The safest color pick is the complete look, stain plus finish plus sheen, on the floor you’re refinishing. Our hand-made Bona DriFast, DuraSeal Quick Coat, and LOBA fan decks on real oak narrow the choices if you’re refinishing red or white oak.
A job sample with the real prep, stain, sealer (if the system uses one), and clear coat shows the actual result, and all four data sheets call for a sample or test area. Sheen changes how a color reads, so the sheen is easiest to judge on the same sample as the stain. Daylight and the room lights show different sides of the color, so it’s worth looking at it both ways.
We’d start with the digital swatches to shortlist a color, narrow it down on a fan deck on real wood, and then approve a sample on the floor itself.

7. Don’t let cheap sandpaper haunt the job
In our experience, cheap sandpaper on a quality wood floor costs more than it saves. It wears out faster, so you change it more often and spend longer in every room, and that matters when you have a due date or the next job is waiting.
The full grit progression belongs on the order. The NWFA says to start with the finest grit that will remove the old coating and flatten the floor, and not to skip more than one grit. A job order usually covers:
- Belts for the big machine, like Norton BlazePlus belts
- Edger paper, like Norton Red Heat edger discs
- Between-coat abrasives matched to the finish: perforated pads for the LOBA finishes, Norton RedHeat 16” screens in 180 or 220 where a screen is the equivalent, or the pad-and-strip system for StreetShoe NXT
- Buffer pads, like 3M 5100 red pads, for the buffer setup. A red pad alone doesn’t replace the specified abrasive.
What’s left from the last job can cover part of the order, and a quick count on the truck and shelf can save a supply run once the sanding starts.

8. Calculate finish quantities before comparing gallon prices
A gallon price only tells you part of the story because coverage sets how many gallons you will need for the job. Here’s the order quantity for a 1,000-square-foot floor, rounded up at each maker’s lower stated coverage rate:
Finish only, with no stain, sealer, or extra allowance. Bona recommends a third Traffic HD coat in heavy-traffic residential and commercial areas.
Add up the finish, stain, sealer, applicators, and abrasives before you quote the job.
9. Order the finish and application supplies together
A bare-wood refinish order covers the approved stain or sealer, the finish, abrasives, applicators, spare covers, and cleanup supplies.
The system decides what’s on that list, and one system’s sealer rule doesn’t carry over to another.
Mixing supplies are the easiest to overlook. Bona and LOBA both publish ratios for mixing less than a full gallon: 1 part hardener to 11.33 parts Traffic HD, and 1 part hardener to 10 parts InvisibleProtect.
LOBA says to use its mixing container or a scale for InvisibleProtect. We carry the LOBA Mixing Cup.
10. Leave clear care instructions and the right cleaner
The best handoff is the finish’s dates, written down, and a small bottle of the right cleaner. We recommend Squeaky Cleaner and Bona Pro Series for hardwood floors, and the finish maker’s care instructions come first.
Full cure doesn’t always mean cleaning can begin. Traffic HD cures in about three days but calls for only a dry microfiber mop or cloth during the first week.
InvisibleProtect lists a five-day cure but no water or detergent during the first week, and StreetShoe NXT calls for water only, no other liquid cleaners, for the first two weeks.
The rug date, the right cleaner, and a simple cleaning routine give the homeowner more to go on than “wait a few days and use a hardwood floor cleaner.”
It also helps to remind them to use felt pads and to lift furniture, never drag it.
Summary
If you only read one tip, make it tip 3. A missed recoat window adds abrading to a job that was already on schedule. The finish sets the coating schedule, the rug dates, the gallons, getting the sample approved, and the complete order delivered before work starts leaves time to fix a missing item.
There are better ways to spend Halloween than tracking down a missing gallon of finish.
