I went on the 2026 turf tour at Ohio Stadium to see the new turf get rolled out. It started at 1PM, and the place was alive with crews at work and people excited for the coming season. The new field is Shaw’s NFL®Approved The Forge Series, a synthetic turf system...

Fan Decks
Family-owned since 1967. NWFA-Certified. Free shipping on all fan decks on orders $75+ with qualifying items.
A printed color card can only estimate what a stain will look like. Our Panel Town fan decks are handmade in our shop and have real stain applied to solid oak, the same exact material used for flooring.
With a fan deck, you and your client can look at the actual color before anyone opens a can.

Why a Real-Wood Fan Deck?
Stain color isn’t a property of the stain alone. It’s the stain plus the wood underneath: the species, grain, and how the surface takes the pigment.
That’s why the same can of Jacobean looks different on red oak than it does on white oak. It’s why a printed swatch can only get you in the neighborhood of the actual stain color.
Stain colors range in tones and the difference can be subtle.
Our handmade fan decks allow you to fan out the full color line with ease and really compare the different looks. You can compare colors side by side knowing that this is what the stain will look like.
Each fan deck is connected to a sturdy metal ring attachment, so you can easily carry it from showroom to the jobsite or to your client’s living room. Unscrew the connector to easily separate each sample. We recommend doing that to get a true feel of

Red Oak & White Oak: Why We Make Both
Red oak and white oak take stain differently. Red oak has warmer, pinkish undertones and a more open grain pattern that shows through the stain.
White oak runs cooler and browner with a tighter grain. Fan the same DuraSeal color out on both decks and you will see two noticeably different results.
We build out both species to help you see the exact color of the stain. That way you can show your clients can see the real difference between how each species takes stain. Â
A fan deck gets you close
Even a real-oak fan deck is a guide, not a guarantee. Your floor’s age, cut, sanding sequence, and finish all determine the final color. Plus boards will vary.
The fan deck helps you go from a range of colors down to two or three with confidence. The final step is an on-site sample. Apply your finalists to a sanded section of the actual floor and look at them in the room’s own light before you commit.
Frequently Asked Questions about Hardwood Stain Fan Decks
What is a stain fan deck?
A stain fan deck is a portable set of color swatches bound at one corner, so you can fan out an entire stain line and compare shades side by side. Our real wood fan decks go a step further: each swatch is real stain hand-applied to solid oak rather than printed on paper.
Are the samples real wood?
On our Panel Town hand-made decks, yes. Every swatch is real stain on solid red or white oak. We also offer printed paper fan decks from manufacturers.
Why does the same stain look different on red oak and white oak?
The wood contributes as much to the final color as the stain. Red oak’s warmer undertones and open grain pull stains toward warm and rustic. White oak’s cooler, browner base and tighter grain keep colors more even and neutral.
Which fan deck should I buy?
Match it to your stain line and your floor. For example, if you’re using DuraSeal on red oak, then order the Panel Town DuraSeal on Real Red Oak. If you’re a contractor running multiple lines or an interior designer, you may find having two or three different fan decks allows you to best meet your client’s needs.
Do I still need to test the stain on my floor?
Yes. Use the fan deck to narrow your choice to two or three colors. Next, apply on-site samples to a sanded section of the actual floor and view them in the room’s lighting before you make your decision.
Do the stain decks work for furniture and cabinets?
The Panel Town Minwax deck does, the rest are specifically for flooring. Our Panel Town Minwax fan deck features 32 popular colors you can use on flooring, furniture, cabinetry, and trim.
Is the wood on your fan decks water-popped?
No, stain was applied straight to unfinished wood.
